The location of Batu Bolong makes is extremely vulnerable to stronger currents. The small island is exposed to strong currents, but these currents also help the underwater diverse coral ecosystem thrive so you can see what most scuba divers only dream of seeing on their best dive days. When we go down in the water, depending on currents, we usually will take a back an forth dive plan as to stay close the rock wall. This helps us to stay away from strong currents and as well, this is where all of the coral reefs are and most of all the aquatic life is. If you turn around and look out into the open waters, sometimes you can see much bigger fish and even sharks or the occasional Manta Ray. If the current allow we can do a snorkel trip there, you don’t have to worry about not seeing an amazing plethora of fish. In the shallow water, so many kinds of marine life swim all around the coral, which make for an amazing snorkelling trip. You can see so many colors up towards the top as well because the sun lights it up and make it incredibly scenic. This is a protected area, so fisherman are not allow to fish is the area, leaving an abundance of marine life for you to see. Making for an incredible underwater experience.
Scuba Diving Batu Bolong Komodo offers so many species of fish that you may be able to recognize, including; Whitetip reef sharks, Giant Trevallies, Tuna, barracuda, ells, napoleon wrasse, hawksbill turtles, many different vibrant soft and hard corals, sponges, and many other kinds of marine life.
Depending the season and the current weather conditions, sometime we can dive all the way around the small island. This is a rarity because ussualy the current comes from the north and we dive or snorkel on the southern side of the island. We start by viewing the coral in the shallow regions and slowly make our way down the reef wall by doing back and forth. This allows us to stay behind the island and not be effected by much of the current. If the current is strong, once we get around the each some of the wall, we will turn around the go the opposite way. We do this going down the reef wall and then back up the reef wall. This is one of those dive sites that you want to have an underway camera on you for sure. As the underwater views are absolutely stunning to see, even for the most advanced divers.
