Flores Islands is a place not to be missed by any traveler. The name Flores was given by the Portuguese and it means “Flowers.” The island is one of Lesser Sunda Islands, which are a group of islands in the eastern Part of Indonesia. The population of the Island is about 1,850,000 and the largest town is the town of Maumere. The location of Flores is east of Sumbawa island and Komodo National Park. On the east side of Flores are the islands of Lembata and the Alor Archipelago. It is northwest of the island of Timor and North of Sumba Strait and Sumba island. To the north is the Flores Sea and the island of Sulawesi. There are many extremely unique things about flores, and one of them being that before modern humans arrived, Flores was actually inhabited by Homo floresiensis which is a pygny archaic human. A few Remains of these pygny archaic humans have been found and they have been found to have anatomical differences from modern humans. As recent evidence shows that the Homo Floresienses like become extinct from the island about 50,000 years ago. The island was also the habitat of several extinct dwarf forms of the proboscidean Stegodon, disappearing approximately 12,000 years ago.
Another incredibly unique thing about Flores island is that famous Komodo dragon can be found on the island of Komodo and Rinca. Tourism has become a major source for the growing economy of Flores Island. One of the most popular tourist attractions on the island is the Volcano named Kelimutu. The unique volcano can be hiked to quite easily as now there are paved walkways. The volcano contained three colored lakes that have also been documented a changing cooler of the years due to changing of oxidation. Kelimutu is located in the district of Ende which is close to the town of Moni. There is also a very popular volcano outside the town of Bajawa which is called Inierie volcano. There are many place that have become very popular for scuba diving and snorkelling. The consist of the north coast by Riung and Maumere. The 17 islands Park, north above Riung is becoming a very popular spot for tourism as well. Unfortunately due to a large tsunami in 1992, many of the reefs were destroyed in the area though. On the west side, Komodo National Park is a very famous by Scuba Diving all over the world.
